Pat San Soucie paints abstract watercolors on paper that are unique in their playfulness and exploration as well as the methods that she utilizes to achieve a finished work of art. She uses very imaginative techniques to include positioning tissue, lace, or torn rice paper as stencils or filters on her painting surface before pouring diluted watercolor or gouache on top of and through the filters. The resulting patterns that emerge inspire her to invent new mediums to include such as brush strokes, colored pencil, inks, graphite, fabric dyes, or Aquarelle crayons to further develop the painting. She has had a fondness for quilt patterns throughout her life and her paintings reflect the patterns found in fabrics with repetitive patterns. She said the key to enjoying her teaching and art is that she loves wrapping herself up in the process, rather than visualizing the product. Pat has admired and been inspired by the work of artists that she has observed such as Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Jasper Johns, Clyfford Still, Wolf Kahn, and Jack Tworkov. An art teacher since 1982, Pat has conducted workshops Nationwide for twenty years. She now inspires artists not to copy her paintings, but to delight in the process of experimenting with the unexpected. Pat, a member of the American Watercolor Society in New York was invited to present the annual AWS Watermedia demonstration for members and friends of the society April 20, 2004, held at the Salmagundi Club at 47 Fifth Anenue, NYC.
